Abstract: This study reports the expected impact of the Mercosur free trade agreement on Chilean dairy farms. In addition, an attempt is made to identify the key sources to develop a relative advantage in this activity. Relying on these results several implications are traced out for strategic management. The findings indicate that (for cost effectiveness and successful competition) a minimum scale of operations is needed together with adequate organizational capabilities and technological development. In this new environment, success for medium and small dairy farms requires prompt acquisition of these assets and skills. Producers that acting alone are incapable of gaining competitive advantage should try to join efforts through strategic alliances. This study is mainly based upon the results of a survey administered to Chile’s dairy farms located in the IX Region.
