Abstract:
This paper contains a synthetic presentation of the approach and the results of an investigation on employment quality in Latin America vis-a-vis the United States, directed by Víctor Tokman. The first part examines the concept, relatively new, of employment quality, its dimensions, as well as the factors that affect its evolution at the micro and macroeconomic levels. The second part summarizes the results of the empirical investigation in the United States and in four Latin American countries (Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Peru). The conclusions show the importance of going further than simply establishing a relationship between employment structure and unemployment, and of considering the evolution of employment quality, its possible deterioration, and the quality of the jobs that are being created or are to be created.
