Abstract:
The Laboratorio di Economia politica di Torino, founded by Salvatore Cognetti de Martiis, was a veritable School of Economics. However, while Achille Loria was the director, the Laboratorio underwent a remarkable transformation, namely it lost some of its original connotations, such as, for example, the markedly experimental character of its studies, which justi?ed its name. A new type of school ?ourished within the new Laboratorio, with largely updated scienti?c programs, and a fresher political and cultural orientation, as marginalism substituted positivism, and economic liberalism took the place of reformism. The new school of though was no longer Loria’s brainchild, but Einaudi’s. Hence, out of one of the main study streams existing in the Laboratorio from its origins, a kind of school, though not in an academic sense, developed around Einaudi, and this established an important tradition in public ?nance giving the Laboratorio a new character.
