Catholocism and Political Economy in Spain (1880-1950). The Contribution of Italians

Abstract: The article focuses on two specific topics around the relationships between political economy and Catholicism in Spain from 1880 to 1950. On the one hand, the article analyses the translations into Spanish of foreign social catholic treatises, and evaluates the importance of this particular circulation of economic ideas in Spain. At the same time, it weights up the relevance of the Italian treatises on social economics with respect to other European countries. The article also sheds light on how the new generations of catholic economists faced the gradual modernization of the economic science in Spain during the 1930s and 1940s through the analysis of a case-study : the group of Catholics that maintained the closest relationships with social Catholicism and catholic hierarchy
