Abstract:
This paper deals with the scientific and disciplinary evolution of statistical studies in Italy from the point of view of the production of textbooks. The analysis of a corpus of textbooks in use in Italian universities during the Risorgimento and in the liberal period allows to track the gradual path toward disciplinary autonomy of statistics from ‘moral sciences’ and then from ‘social sciences’. This path in the Italian case highlights an original eVort to maintain a ‘descriptive’ approach, even if allowing a significant shift in the meaning of the attribute.
