Abstract:
This paper attempts to give an interpretation of the economic thought of the Italian mathematician Bruno de Finetti (1906-1985). De Finetti is well known to the international scientific community for his theories, elaborated during the 1930s, on subjective probability. The concept of probability and that of utility, according to de Finetti’s view, are strictly connected, as shown by the studies on decision theory that were developed some decades later. De Finetti’s contribution tries to reformulate welfare economics as a «geometry of welfare», based on the connection between subjective probability and utility. De Finetti’s geometry of welfare starts from the Paretian Optimum to formalize an original social welfare function.
