Abstract:
In the field of price theory, Sismondi adopts an approach mixing Smithian and ‘catallactic’ elements largely in opposition to the Ricardian tradition. Pre-dating Ricardo’s contribution, Sismondi’s theory of prices displays a very particular Continental flavour giving supply and demand a much larger but not exclusive part to play. The surprising influence of Canard and the explicit part played by the price system within the social contract in which the class of consumers includes ‘the universality of all citizen’ allow Sismondi to link in an explicit way price theory and political philosophy
