Abstract:
The Florentine «Il Proletario. Giornale economico-socialista per la democrazia operaia» [«The proletarian. Economic and socialist newspaper devoted to the working class democracy»] is considered one of the first socialist newspapers distributed in Italy, together with the Neapolitan «Libertà e Lavoro». It was founded and directed by Niccolò Lo Savio (1834-1911), who published twenty issues between 1865 and 1866. This paper aims to describe the historical, political and cultural background in which «Il Proletario» was developed and the beliefs that were expressed by his director, always inspired by a strong confidence on cooperative institutions. In the end, Lo Savio will be presented as an emblematic figure of a generation of young democrats disappointed by the weak reformism showed by their contemporary political leaders and gradually attracted by Socialism.
