Abstract: This essay examines one of the most interesting topics on Sismondi’s political thought: the ambiguity of his positions in respect to the federal constitution. Based on the analysis of his political works, we tried to investigate the matter attempting, therefore, to return to the complexity and depth of Sismondi’s thought. We came to the conclusion that federalism, for the Genevan thinker, is not an ‘end’ but a ‘means’. It’s not indispensable in order to obtain freedom and balance in political systems
