Abstract: Giuseppe Toniolo is probably the most important exponent of the economical and social catholic thought between ’800 and ’900. He analyzed the genesys and the positive as well as the negative contribution of Capitalism to the modern economy dinamics; he noted the role of Socialism in defense of the «legitimate needs» and the «exemplary rights» of popular classes, but he also highlights the allencompassing and deterministic aspects, deriving from Hegel, as well as the the non-religious aspect. Alternatively, he proposes a «Christian way» to build a new free and righteous society, where ethics is an intrinsic factor of economics, wealthy is not the final aim but instrumental, the profit is subject to the centrality of the human being, to be is predominant on to have, and «democracy» express through its representatives those everlasting moral values always reviving as well as deeply renewed.
