Abstract:
The titanic work of Massimo Augello equals that of Pietro Custodi (Scrittori classici italiani d’economia politica), Francesco Ferrara (Biblioteca dell’economista) and Luigi Cossa (Saggi bibliografici). It represents an indispensable guide to Italian economic thought of the 19th century. It has three kind of users: the political economist, the contemporary economist and the heir of economists’ archives. All of these make a different use of economists’ thought and histories. The heirs determine the geographical distribution of the economists’ documents; politicians use past theories to influence the welfare of people; present-day economists adhere to a school of thought and magnify their founding fathers in order to prevail in academic disputes. For whatever use, the wealth of information amassed by Massimo Augello in his Dictionary will prove indispensable to economists, politicians and historians alike
