Abstract: Small and medium sized enterprises play an important role in economic development of a country. The range of social, political and economic functions of this group of companies is very wide. The food industry is a domain of the economy with a particularl capacity for the development of small and medium sized enterprises. The sector of small and medium sized enterprises has played an important role in the food industry. However, the concentration in that sector causes the situation where large companies, including multinational corporations, are of growing importance. Because of the specific features of this sector, small and medium sized enterprises will last as a permanent and important component of the Polish food industry.
