Les marchandises et le signe: Turgot versus Montesquieu

Abstract: [eng] Today economists, by qualifying a kind of money as sign, would only mean to suggest that it is not so real as goods. But, as M. Foucault underlined it in Les mots et les choses, something more important was at stake for some authors of the 18 th century. Montesquieu and Turgot had different theories of sign, which conveyed opposite conceptions of money, and which led to alternative approaches of the object of political economy. [fre] Certains économistes contemporains, en qualifiant la monnaie de signe, ne visent qu'à lui attribuer une certaine irréalité. Au xvuie siècle, concevoir la monnaie comme un signe avait un tout autre enjeu, comme M. Foucault l'a mis en lumière dans Les mots et les choses. La monnaie est un signe pour Montesquieu comme pour Turgot, mais ces deux auteurs ont néanmoins des théories du signe bien différentes, qui engagent à des approches opposées de l'objet de l'économie politique.
