Abstract: [eng] State and private conglomerates - This article provides a methodological presentation and an analysis of the initial results obtained by the INSEE 's system of observation of business conglomerates. First, it presents the importance — both overall and within various sectors — of the firms within conglomerates, especially the firms under their direct control. Next, the conglomerates themselves are studied, their number, their size as well as the size of the firms within them, and a special chapter is devoted to their diversification — its location and size. The impact on the French economy and some specific characteristics of the state-owned sector are presented at the close of the article by drawing a distinction between the established state sector and the new state-owned sector which is the result of the recent law on nationalizations. [spa] Los grupos públicos y privados - El artículo presenta la metodología y comenta los primeros resultados conseguidos por el sistema de observación de los grupos de sociedades instaurados en el INSEE. En primer lugar, présenta la importancia global y en los sectores de actividades de las sociedades de los grupos, especialmente en las sociedades bajo control. A continuación se estudian los grupos mismos, el número de sus implantaciones, su tamano así como el de sus empresas, un capítulo por separado esta dedicado a su diversificación (lugar e importancia). El peso en la ecomía francesa y unas cuantas caracterfsticas especfíicas del sector público van presentadas al final del artículo, distinquiendose el anterior sector público del que remata de la reciente ley de nacionalizaciones. [fre] L'article présente la méthodologie et commente les premiers résultats obtenus par le système d'observation des groupes de sociétés mis en place à l'INSEE. Il présente d'abord l'importance globale et dans les secteurs d'activités des sociétés des groupes et en particulier des sociétés contrôlées. On étudie ensuite les groupes eux-mêmes, leur nombre d'implantation, leur taille ainsi que celle de leurs entreprises; un chapitre à part est consacré à leur diversification (place et importance). Le poids dans l'économie française et quelques caractéristiques spécifiques du secteur public sont présentés en fin d'article en distinguant l'ancien secteur public de celui qui résulte de la récente loi de nationalisation.
