Abstract:
[eng] Charles Gide (1847-1932), better known for his work on the theory of cooperation and the history of economic doctrines, was very interested in population problems, and his writings provide an illuminating testimony on the emergence of demographic issues in France at the end of the last century. He gives an original analysis of the characteristics, reasons and consequences of the French depopulation, and the positions he defends are on the whole anti-malthusian, though they were to evolve against the dominant French ideas. The same applies to his rather nonconformist opinions on immigration, colonization, anti-racial feelings, sionism and feminism.
