L'assistance paroissiale à Bordeaux à la fin du XVIIe siècle. L'exemple du consistoire protestant (1660-1670)

Abstract: [fre] L'assistance paroissiale était une forme importante d'aide aux indigents. A Bordeaux au XVIIe siècle on peut estimer qu'elle couvrait un cinquième des besoins. Le registre des protestants bordelais - minorité de 2 000 personnes - permet d'étudier le fonctionnement de ce type d'assistance sous-estimé. Elle répondait à une grande variété de situations : maladie, chômage, accident de travail etc. par des aides financières, médicales, la mise en pension, l'aide judiciaire, l'aide à l'établissement et à la formation d'apprentis. Le registre du consistoire permet de suivre des cas individuels pendant plusieurs années. Le consistoire prenait en charge autant les protestants bordelais qu'étrangers. L'assistance était efficace, rapide, flexible, favorisait l'intégration des indigents et les habituait en même temps aux vertus « modernes » : à l'économie, à l'assiduité dans le travail et à l'effort. [eng] Abstract Parish assistance was an important form to help the poor. In seventeenth century Bordeaux we can estimate it responding to one fifth of all needs. The Bordeaux consistory register of the protestants - a minority of 2 000 persons in a 35 000 habitants city - makes it possible to study the running of the underestimated parish assistance. The consistory helped in many situations : illness, unemployment, work accident and so on with financial support, medical and judicial aid. It put the poor into families, aided craftsmen and paid apprenticeships. The register makes it possible to study individuel cases during several years. The parish assistance applied to bordelais and « foreigners ». It was efficient, rapid, flexible, favored the integration of the poor and accustomed them to « modern » virtues : making restrictions on expenditure and assiduity in working behaviour.
