Abstract: [fre] Résumé. L'inventaire moderne, avec analyse et identifications rigoureuses, index et guides géographiques et méthodiques, révèle la richesse documentaire des archives. L'inventaire récent de la chancellerie de Philippe VI permet, par exemple, d'évoquer la lutte de la royauté contre les structures de violence de la société française du XlVe siècle. Au droit coutumier, autorisant la guerre privée entre nobles, à la justice de classe dispensée par les tribunaux seigneuriaux et ecclésiastiques, le roi oppose patiemment le contrôle tatillon de ses juges. En se dotant d'une fiscalité permanente et d'une administration efficace, il s'impose, au milieu du siècle, comme le seul garant de la sécurité publique et de l'unité nationale. [eng] The modem inventory, with its analyses and rigorous identifications, its index, its geographic and methodical guides, reveals the documentary abundance of the archives. The recent inventory of the chancellery of Philippe VI, for instance, evokes the struggle of kingship against the structures of violence of the French society during the 14th century. The king patiently sets the pernickety control of his judges against the Common Law, which allows private wars between noblemen, and against the inequitable justice dispensed by seigniorial and ecclesiastical courts. After having set up an efficient administration and a system of steady taxation, the king clearly appears, in the middle of the 14th century, as the sole guarantor of public security and national unity.
