Stagnation, Régression, Reconversion: Les « Villes en déclin » de l'espace allemand, 1600-1800

Abstract: [fre] Résumé Dans l'histoire urbaine de l'Allemagne moderne, le déclin n'est pas rare puisqu'il concerne près de la moitié des villes comptant au moins 10 000 habitants en 1600. Le déclin démographique correspond néanmoins à des réalités différentes, ainsi que le montre la confrontation de l'indicateur démographique à un ensemble d'indicateurs quantifiés de vitalité culturelle. L'analyse de trois cas particuliers (Durlach, Aix-la-Chapelle et Augsbourg) permet enfin d'opposer les villes payant le maintien de leur niveau de population d'un déclin économique et social accéléré, aux villes pour qui le déclin démographique est l'occasion d'une reconversion qualitative réussie. [eng] Abstract In the urban history of modern Germany decline is no rare development concerning more than half of the cities of more than 10 000 inhabitants in 1600. Nevertheless, the demographic decline corresponds with different realities as shown by opposing the demographic indicator and a panel of quantified indicators of cultural vitality. Analysing three particular cases (Durlach, Aachen, Augsburg) then allows the opposition of two types of cities : these paying for the maintenance of their niveau of population by accelerated economic and social decline with those who take the chances offered by the demographic decline for an economic restructuring while increasing quality.
