Les armées révolutionnaires à Uri (1789-1799): les conséquences démographiques

Abstract: [fre] Résumé Le canton d'Un, petit Etat indépendant au cœur alpin de la Confédération, tombe à partir de 1798 dans la tourmente révolutionnaire et subit jusqu'en 1800, six occupations différentes. Celles-ci dévastent et appauvrissent complètement la région. La crise démographique attendue dans ces conditions n'apparaît pas trop dans les registres, parce que les exactions « normales » dans ce genre de guerre ne sont pas commises. On peut conclure que l'occupation française précipite certes le pays dans une crise profonde et longue mais celle-ci aurait de toute façon frappé le canton puisque les équilibres démographico-économiques étaient sur le point d'être rompus. [eng] Abstract From 1798 to 1800, the canton Uri, a small and independent State in the alpine heart of the Swiss Confederation is caught in the troubles of the French Revolution and occupied six times by different armed forces. This leaves this region completely destroyed and its inhabitants in bitter poverty. For this reason, one expects to see a major demographic crisis to develop. This, however , is not the case mainly because the region is not involved in brutal repression. The conclusion is that the French revolution only precipitates Uri in a long and serious crisis which would have appeared later anyway : the region's economic and demographic equilibrium was on the point of disrupted.
