Abstract: [fre] Résumé : Si l'existence de la S.E.I.N. est vaguement connue des historiens, sa composition sociale ne l'était pas. Or seule l'étude prosopographique de ses membres durant la première décennie de son activité permet d'en saisir l'originalité profonde. Institution privée, elle tient à la fois de la société académique de naguère et du cercle technocratique de demain, assurant par son bulletin un rôle d'information technique sans équivalent en France dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle. [eng] Abstract : If the S.E.I.N. has not been entirely unfamiliar to economic historians, its social composition was unknown. But only a prosopographic survey of its members during its first ten years can explain its genuine originality. As a private society, it combines elements of the old academic societies and of the new technocratic club. Through its «bulletin», it played a unique role of dessiminating technological information in post-revolutionary France.
