II. Un essai de « réhabilitation »

Tomiko Yoshida

Histoire, économie & société, 1990, vol. 9, issue 4, 503-520

[eng] Abstract Tomiko Yoshida carries out a critical examination of diverse testmonies to relieve the Cardinal of the accusation of avarice. Starting off from these premises she follows the enrichment of the Prime Minister, in its successive phases. She endeavours to prove that, in accumulating possessions of unrivaled amounts, Mazarin really wished to provide while he was living, and after, for Louis XIV the means of a great policy. The unwillingness to understand him from which Mazarin is a victim, is mainly due to his cult for secrecy. His refusal to disclose his intentions has long lastingly put him at a disavantage in the opinion os posterity.
