Abstract: [eng] Abstract This introduction corresponds in parts to the synthesis given at the International Congress in Louvain during the A2 session. Taking into account the diverse studies brought together in this special issue, it summarizes the principle phases of transportation history during the 19th and 20th centuries, making note of the particularities of each system in comparison with (an) other competing system(s) as well as the particularities of each of the principal countries of the European continent. [fre] Résumé Cette introduction reprend en partie le rapport de synthèse que nous avions présenté lors de la session A2 du congrès international de Louvain. Tenant compte des différentes études réunies dans ce numéro spécial, elle résume les principales phases de l'histoire des transports terrestres au cours des XIX et XXe siècles, tout en dégageant non seulement les spécificités de chaque système par rapport aux modes de transport concurrents, mais aussi les particularités des principaux pays de l'Europe continentale.
