Abstract: [fre] Résumé Ce texte dresse un bilan de nos travaux en soulignant quelques traits fondamentaux du système ferroviaire belge. Les chemins de fer ont eu avant tout une vocation commerciale et internationale car, dès le début des années 1830, l'État, en tant que promotteur de leur construction, sera à l'origine de la configuration du réseau bien organisé et relié aux lignes ferroviaires importantes des pays voisins. L'établissement du réseau qui fut le complément des autres voies de transport a joué un rôle déterminant dans le développement des industries sidérurgiques et mécaniques, mais l'épargne sociale a été relativement faible par suite d'une infrastructure routière très dense qui atténua les effets d'une hypothétique absence du chemin de fer. [eng] Abstract The essay reviews current research and calls attention to several of the basic characteristics of the Belgian railway system. The system was above all motivated by commercial and international interests, for the State, as promoter from the 1830's on, determined the system's configuration, its organization and its links with neighboring countries' systems. The construction of the railway system, as a complement to other means of transportation, played a determining role in the development of industry and especially of the steel industry. The «social savings» it afforded were however limited by the dense roadway network which attenuated what might have been the effects of a hypothetically absent railway system.
