Abstract: [fre] Résumé Les caractères idiosyncratiques de la conférence de Genève sont d'abord rappelés, mais l'article l'étudié principalement comme exemple de coopération franco-britannique au cours d'une crise. Il souligne aussi le rôle des personnalités qui participèrent à la conférence, à commencer par A. Eden et P. Mendès-France. La situation militaire en Indochine, qui était de plus en plus difficile pour la France, obligea les Occidentaux à accepter une négociation avec le Vietminh, la Chine communiste et l'U.R.S.S., malgré l'extrême répugnance de J. Foster Dulles. L'article retrace ce processus, puis les péripéties de la conférence, en insistant sur le rôle de la politique britannique dans la réalisation d'un accord. Mais celui-ci était ambigu et n'assura à l'Indochine qu'un retour éphémère de la paix. [eng] Abstract The specificities of the Geneva conference are stressed, but the conference is mainly analyzed as an example of diplomatic co-operation between Britain and France, during an international crisis. The role of individuals is also emphasized, particularly of Anthony Eden and P. Mendès-France. The worsening military situation in Indochina obliged the Western powers to accept a négociation with the Vietnamese communists, Red China and the U.S.S.R., though J. Foster Dulles was extremely reluctant. This process is described, and then the vicissitudes at the conference ; the important role of british policy in the reaching of an agreement is stressed. Still, the settlement was ambiguous and Indochina was to enjoy only a brief interlude of peace.
