Guy Tachard ou la Marine française dans les Indes orientales (1684-1701)

Abstract: [fre] Résumé La Compagnie française des Indes était au bord de la faillite lorsque Seignelay la réorganisa en 1685. Louis XIV, espérant que la Compagnie rénovée pourrait concurrencer le commerce hollandais, envoya une ambassade au Siam. Celle-ci n'obtint pas le succès espéré, mais Seignelay et le Roi, sur les conseils du père Tachard, décidèrent de persévérer. Guy Tachard est un jésuite aujourd'hui oublié, il fut pourtant l'inspirateur de l'engagement français aux Indes et en Extrême-Orient à la fin du XVIIe siècle. Le soutien du père de la Chaize et ses talents de diplomates lui firent obtenir l'envoi d'une expédition militaire au Siam puis d'une escadre nombreuse dans l'océan Indien. Dans les circonstances dramatiques de la guerre de la ligue d'Augsbourg, il s'efforça de continuer la diplomatie française dans une région désertée par les escadres du Roi. L'aventure maritime de Dupleix et de Lally aux Indes, et l'aventure coloniale française en Indochine prennent racines dans son combat audacieux et obstiné. [eng] Abstract The french East India Company was close to bankruptcy before being reorganized by Seignelay in 1685. To enable the revived Company to compete with the dutch trade, Louis XIV sent an embassy to Siam. Despite its disapointing results Seignelay and the king decided to persevere on the advice of father Tachard. Guy Tachard is a jesuit no longer remembered nowadays, and yet, at the end of the XVIIth century, he has been the inspirer of the french engagement in the Indies and in Far East Asia. With the help of father de la Chaize and his own diplomatic skills he succeeded to have a military expedition sent to Siam and then to have a large squadron sailed to the Indian ocean. In the dramatic circumstances of the war against the league of Augsburg he strived to continue the french diplomacy in an area deserted by the vessels of his king. The sea adventure of Dupleix and Lally in the Indies, and the french colonial adventure in Indochina have their roots in his audacious and obstinate fight.
