[eng] Abstract The poor parish priest in the Sertâo or the chapelain of a sugar-mill owner are at a long distance from administrative and ecclesiastical authorities. They do not live, therefore, their calling in the same way as the priest who resides in the capital city. Thanks to wills and inventories after death, historians observe the familiar images of the priest as school-master, as godfather, as uncle, as father of a family. He is always close to his flock and to their preoccupations ; he is dependant upon them for his daily living, but he has a leading role in his community.
