Abstract: [fre] Résumé Ces réflexions portent à la fois sur la façon d'étudier et la nature du quartier populaire dans le Paris de la fin du XIXe siècle. Faut-il accepter les limites préétablies par le choix d'un quartier précis, ou bien se concentrer sur l'étude du « local » dont l'emprise était très forte, mais dont les frontières restent extrêmement mouvantes ? Ce « village » dont parlent les anciens habitants impliquait une forte inter-connaissance, une certaine forme de vie en commun et une solidarité indéniable. Mais cela n'empêchait en aucune façon que la vie privée existait bel et bien et était respectée, que les clivages internes et les querelles faisaient intimement partie de la vie relationnelle et que d'autres horizons que le quartier s'offraient aux individus. [eng] Abstract These comments treat both the nature of the working class quarter in Paris in the late nineteenth century and the way in which to study it. Should one accept the pre-established limits set by the choice of a specific quarter or concentrate on the study of the « local » which ways are really heavy, yet boundaries fluctuate enormously. The « village » of which the former inhabitants speak, implies a strong mutual knowledge, a certain common way of life, and an undeniable solidarity. Nevertheless, privacy did exist and was well respected, internal divisions and arguments were an intimate part of social life, and individuals were presented with possibilities from outside the quarter.
