Abstract: [fre] Résumé L'élection coutumière du prévôt des marchands et des échevins rencontrait l'assentiment du roi, sans doute parce qu'elle contribuait à garantir le crédit de la monarchie à travers celui des bourgeois. Mais le corps de ville, comme tout corps d'officiers, obéissait aux logiques concurrentes de la résignation in favorem et de la vénalité. Cependant les pratiques électives limitées qui assuraient la représentation des bourgeois les plus "apparents" résistèrent aux crises du XVIe siècle. L'organisation des pouvoirs municipaux visa toujours, en dernière analyse, à établir une répartition équilibrée des charges entre notables, officiers du roi et marchands. [eng] Abstract The customary election of the aldermen met with the king's approval : this election contributed to guarantee the credit of the monarchy thanks to the credit of the town. But the corporate town, like any corporation of office holders, followed the dictates of two opposites systems, that of resignatio in javorem and that of venality. However the elective limited pratice, which insured the representation of the most "notable" Parisians, resisted the crisis which took place in the Sixteenth Century. In fact the political constitution of the urban community always aimed at securing a fair distribution of the city offices between the civil servants and the merchants.
