Abstract: [eng] Abstract The story of Francis Bouygues is that of an altogether meteoric rise in society. Over thirty years, his firm ascended to the rank of world leader in the field of construction and civil engineering. His initial successes in housing development and the building of low-rent housing estates enabled him, as from the late 1960s, to claim his place among the majors in the building industry. Completion of grand projects (the Paris Parc des Princes stadum, the Teheran stadium, Ryadh University), and the takeover of one of his main rivals, SCREG, have consolidated his position as world number one in the field. This success story is due equally to his insistence of the prime importance of commercial function ; to early adoption of American-style management practices ; and to an effective combination of technical innovation, diversification (T.F.I, television) and motivating of individuals. He has thus secured for his family, within the group's management. [fre] Résumé L'histoire de la Société de Construction des Batignolles - SCB - entre 1940 et 1968 correspond à l'achèvement d'une illustre épopée au cours de laquelle la firme se hissa parmi les grands de la profession des travaux publics. La période 1940-1944 lui porta un coup fatal et marqua une césure irrémédiable dans son histoire. Pourtant, après les flottements du « temps de l'épuration » la firme renouait avec une forte croissance. Mais très vite, les difficultés surgirent et les malheurs rencontrés en Egypte, sur le chantier d'Idfina, révélèrent les carences des dirigeants en matière de gestion. Dès 1954, ils durent abandonner le contrôle de leur société au profit du groupe Empain. Cependant, les efforts déployés par la nouvelle équipe pour relever la SCB s'avérèrent insuffisants : l'idée d'un rapprochement avec la SPIE s'imposa peu à peu...
