Les grandes entreprises européennes de travaux publics face au marché international (1880-1914)

Abstract: [fre] Résumé À partir des années 1880, les données du marché international des travaux publics se modifièrent sensiblement en raison à la fois d'un déplacement de la demande (achèvement de la mise en place des grandes infrastructures de base en Europe occidentale et centrale, réorientation au profit des colonies, puis de la Russie, de l'Amérique latine, des Dominions et de la Chine) et d'une mutation technologique (révolution de l'acier, béton armé). Si l'industrie britannique des travaux publics demeurait la première du monde, elle fut de plus en plus concurrencée non seulement par les firmes françaises, mais encore par les entreprises allemandes et belges, voire suisses, Scandinaves et italiennes. En Allemagne et en Belgique autant qu'en Grande-Bretagne et en France naquirent de puissantes entreprises dont Philipp Holzmann (Allemagne) et Ackermans & Van Haaren (Belgique) offrent de bons exemples. [eng] Abstract From the 1880s, conditions on the international market for civil engineering and public works saw a change, as a result, concurrently, of a shift in demand (with completion of a major infrastructures Western and Central Europe and the redeployment towards the colonies, and later still into Russia, Latin the British Dominions and China), and of a technological transformation (the steel revolution, rei- concrete). While the British civil engineering industry retained its position as world leader, it came under threat from completion, not only from French, German and Belgian firms, but even from Swiss, Scandinavians and Italians. Germany and Belgium, no less than France or the United Kingdom, the emergence of powerful firms, as instanced by Philipp Holzmann (Germany) and Ackermans & Haaren (Belgium).
