[eng] Abstract Before the first endikements and reclamations which began in the second half of the 10th century, the coastal parts of ancient Frisia consisted of a marshy plain which was continuously threatened by overflows. However, this plain, which have been inhabited since the first millenium J. C, became one of the most densely populated and properous countries in the West during the Dark and early Middle Ages. The purpose of this paper is to explain that paradoxical achievement : an original and very sophisticated kind of settlement, the development of a breeding economy in the marshland, the importance of craft and exchange and the opening onto other worlds.
