Abstract: [fre] Résumé Tout de suite après la deuxième guerre mondiale, il n'était ni souhaitable ni possible pour l'industrie chimique européenne de revenir au statu quo de l'avant-guerre. Après 1945, la « reconstruction » était donc beaucoup moins urgente que la « nouvelle construction ». Il fallait remanier de fond en comble cette industrie, et ceci dans le cadre de trois changements décisifs : 1) la fin de la prédominance précédente de l'industrie chimique allemande; 2) l'apparition d'une nouvelle technologie et de nouveaux produits; 3) la nouvelle position des États-Unis. Ni les changements ni le remaniement ne se réalisèrent dans leur plénitude durant les années 1945- 1949. Cependant, les fondations de la croissance de l'après-guerre et de l'adaptation institutionnelle à long terme se trouvèrent posées aussitôt après le conflit. [eng] Abstract For the European chemical industry immediately after World War II, return to the status quo ante bellum was both unthinkable and undesirable. « Reconstruction » was therefore much less pressing than was « new construction » after 1945. The industry required fundamental redefinition in the context of three decisive changes : 1. the end to previous dominance of the germon chemical industry; 2. new technologies and products; and, 3. the new position of the United States. Neither the changes nor the redefinition came to full fruition during the years 1945-1949. Nonetheless, the long-term bases for post-war growth and institutional adjustment in the chemical industry were laid immediately after the War.
