Abstract: [fre] Résumé Les employés de la Compagnie Parisienne du Gaz constituent un bon champ d'étude d'un groupe social en formation au cours de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. La croissance de leur nombre fut associée au développement de l'entreprise. Fortement hiérarchisée, cette société est caractéristique de la grande entreprise multifonctionnelle. Malgré la durée de la concession, le recrutement des agents fut tardivement homogénéisé. Le travail était pourtant peu diversifié, basé sur la compilation des données et le suivi de l'exploitation, toutes occupations qui privilégiaient l'écrit et la fonction de copiste. En revanche, très tôt, un statut apparut sans être formalisé, par l'octroi de privilèges sociaux et la distinction évidente avec la précarité ouvrière. Mais cette œuvre, destinée à conserver le personnel, n'empêcha pas à la fin du siècle la revendication d'un véritable statut. [eng] Abstract The Parisian gas company is a very good example of the big enterprise during the second half of nineteenth century. Many employees were engaged in a parallel direction with the growth of production and gas consumption. The firm was managed on the hierarchical system, so clerks had a leading pari in the working. Nevertheless, their tasks were simple : transcripts of daily activities, open the mail and correspond with consumers, reckon in one's head all the data. In return, employees of Parisian gas company profit by social advantages. But, at the end of century, they expected a real personal status.
