Abstract: [fre] Résumé À partir de 1860, l'État a pris conscience de la nécessité d'adapter les ports français aux nouvelles conditions du transport maritime. Malgré la mise en reuvre de programmes ambitieux, la France n'est pas parvenue en ce domaine à combler son retard technique par rapport aux autres puissances maritimes européennes. Le statut administratif et financier des ports français a néanmoins évolué vers une plus grande autonomie au cours des premières décennies du vingtième siècle. [eng] Abstract From 1860, the State decided it was necessary to adapt French ports to the new maritime transport conditions. Despite undertaking several ambitions programmes, France wouldn't keep up with the technical advances of other European maritimes forces. The financial and administrative status of French ports nevertheless continued to strenghten during the first few decades of the twentieth century.
