Abstract: [eng] Abstract Just after the First World War, the Bank of England' s foreign policy was marked chiefly by its concern to restore the international power of sterling. It is in this context, and not in light of a possible pro-German attitude on the part of the governor of the Bank of England, that we should analyze the cooperation that developed between the English central bank and the Reichsbank from 1921. Montagu Norman's aim was to bring the German issuing bank back into an international monetary system reconstructed on the basis of the Gold Exchange Standard. The German bank's political autonomy would be assured and the Bank of England would regain the dominant position it held before 1914. [fre] Résumé Au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, la politique extérieure de la Banque d'Angleterre est principalement marquée par le souci de restaurer la puissance internationale de la livre sterling. C'est dans ce contexte et non en relation avec une éventuelle germanophilie du gouverneur de la Banque d'Angleterre, qu'il faut analyser les formes de coopération développées à partir de 1921 entre la banque centrale anglaise et la Reichsbank. Le dessein de Montagu Norman visait à réintroduire la banque d'émission allemande, assurée de son autonomie politique, dans un système monétaire international recomposé sur la base du Gold Exchange Standard où la Banque d'Angleterre retrouverait la position dominante qu'elle occupait avant 1914.
