Le héros introuvable: les récits de fondation de cités en Italie: XIVe-XVIe siècle

Abstract: [fre] Résumé Cette étude réexamine, entre les XIVe et XVIe siècles, un type de source déjà exploité, celui des récits de fondation, œuvres d'auto-célébration des cités d'Italie du Nord. Miroirs de la conscience de soi urbaine, ces nombreux textes, qu'ils soient d'inspiration médiévale ou humaniste, exaltent la glorieuse et ancienne fondation de la ville, sous les auspices de héros prestigieux (et souvent éponymes) et de civilisations grandioses. Une analyse de leurs structures permet pourtant de souligner, sur la longue durée, l'impossible sérénité des cités face à leurs origines : bien souvent, elles naissent dans les troubles et la violence, évinçant alors la figure héroïque du fondateur. [eng] Abstract This article concerns the ideas of northern kalian chronicles about their city's founding, between fourteenth and sixteenth centuries; through those fonts, I intend to examine the complex city's self-image. Indeed, the vision of city's founding reveals the perception of city's identity : both medieval anf humanist historiography claimed an old and heroic founding, in order to exalt the great destiny of the cities. Although those texts seem to be writings of propaganda, of citizenry's ideology, a precise analysis of their structures provides a violent vision of urban communities : cities were founded in struggles and crimes, what denies the founding's heroic character.
