Abstract: [fre] Résumé À partir de la distinction entre gloire extrinsèque (fondée principalement sur la reconnaissance par autrui) et gloire intrinsèque (fondée sur la vertu et sur «le témoignage de notre propre conscience»), ce travail propose une réflexion sur la gloire du monarque, lui-même fontaine de gloire et qui ne doit de comptes qu'à Dieu. À travers une analyse de quelques grands discours d'Elisabeth Ire d'Angleterre, nous verrons comment, en définissant la gloire du monarque comme l'amour que lui témoignent ses sujets, réciproque de l'amour qu'elle leur porte, Elisabeth réussit à s'approcher le plus possible de l'idéal de fusion entre gloire extrinsèque et gloire intrinsèque, ce qui fit d'elle une sorte d'incarnation de la gloire et lui valut le surnom de Gloriana dans l'épopée allégorique de Spenser La Reine des fées. [eng] Abstract Starting from the distinction between external glory (heavily dependent on external recognition) and internal glory (grounded on virtue and the inner feeling of one's own conscience), this work offers a reflection on the glory of the monarch, himself the fountain of glory and solely responsible before God. Through an analysis of some of Elizabeth's great speeches, we shall see how, by defining the glory of the monarch as the love her subjects bore her, which was the counterpart of the love she bore them, Elizabeth managed to approximate the ideal of a fusion of external and internal glory, which turned her into a kind of embodiment of glory and earned her the title of Gloriana in Spenser's allegorical epic The Faerie Queene.
