Abstract: [eng] Abstract Although research is an old tradition in the Pechiney group, the group only came up with the notion of research and development in 1919. The 30-year postwar boom saw Pechiney 's active participation in the huge R&D effort. But the compagny only started collaboration with public research organizations in the 1960s, a practice that has been intensified since 1984. R&D was then definitely established as one of the key elements of the company strategy. But the priority given to the shareholders' interests has led to sacrifice R&D on the budget whereas R&D is the basic condition for the company's survival. [fre] Résumé Si le groupe Pechiney possède une tradition ancienne de recherche, la notion de recherche-développement n'est apparue qu'en 1919. Après 1945, Pechiney participe à l'énorme effort de recherche- développement des trente glorieuses. Mais il faut attendre les années 1960 pour que s'instaure une collaboration entre l'entreprise et les organismes publics de recherche qui se resserre beaucoup à partir de 1984. Il est acquis au début des années 1990 que la R&D est l'un des éléments clefs de la stratégie de l'entreprise. Pourtant la priorité accordée à l'actionnariat ne va-t-elle pas remettre cela en cause?
