L'État et l'assurance des risques à l'exportation: la COFACE (1946-1966)

Abstract: [eng] Abstract Export credit insurance represents a specific type of insurance, connected to the state and its commercial policy. France's COFACE, one of the major firms specializing in the insurance of export credit risk, has not been studied from a historical standpoint. This article attempts such a study by focusing on its first two decades of activity. Starting with an overview of the COFACE' s relations with the state, it examines export credit insurance techniques and concludes with various measurements of the company's performance during the initial twenty years of its existence. In order to put these results in perspective, the COFACE is examined alongside its Canadian counterpart, the Export Credits Insurance Corporation. This article opens the way to further comparative and historical research into the role of the leading export credit insurance companies. [fre] Résumé L'assurance-crédit à l'exportation constitue un type particulier d'assurance, lié à l'État et à sa politique commerciale. L'une des principales sociétés d'assurance des risques à l'exportation, la COFACE, n'a pas fait l'objet d'études à caractère historique. Le présent article, portant sur ses deux premières décennies d'activité, est un essai dans ce sens. L'examen des rapports COFACE-État et des mécanismes de Г assurance-crédit à l'exportation conduit à une évaluation chiffrée des résultats de l'action de la COFACE pendant les vingt premières années de son existence. En vue de mettre ces résultats en perspective, la COFACE est confrontée à son équivalent canadien, la SACE. L'article ouvre la voie à de nouvelles études comparatives et historiques des plus importantes sociétés d'assurance des risques à l'exportation.
