Abstract: [eng] Abstract From the end of the 1960s to the creation of the euro, the official US position on European monetary unification has always been supportive. Yet this support has limits. American opinion has always favoured trade liberalisation as well as defence and security cooperation between Western European countries, but it has never displayed enthusiasm toward the goal of a common European currency. The European Economic and Monetary Union is an ambitious endeavour, based on political as well as economic interests, and there has been no unified American reaction to the creation of the euro. [fre] Résumé L'étude menée depuis la fin des années soixante jusqu'à l'introduction de l'euro permet de souligner la constance de l'engagement américain en faveur de la construction monétaire. Mais elle révèle aussi les limites de ce positionnement officiel. Autant les objectifs de désarmement douanier et de coopération en matière de défense et de sécurité ont pu intéresser l'opinion américaine, autant celui d'unification monétaire, en lui-même n'a jamais suscité d'enthousiasme aux États-Unis. L'intérêt de l'examen des attitudes américaines par rapport à l'Union Économique et Monétaire est double du fait du caractère ambivalent d'un projet ambitieux, où les considérations politiques voisinent avec les intérêts économiques, mais aussi, parce qu'il n'y a pas eu de réactions uniformes à l'introduction de l'euro aux États-Unis.
