« Le théâtre des jugements de Dieu ». Le providentialisme et la Réforme protestante dans l'Angleterre des XVIe et XVIIe siècles

Abstract: [fre] Résumé Cet article explore la croyance en l'intervention divine dans l'Angleterre des XVIe et xvne siècles et les implications du providentialisme, ceci afin de mieux comprendre l'impact et l'enracinement de la Réforme protestante. Tout d'abord il entend examiner les tendances historiographiques générales en se concentrant sur la doctrine de la Providence et sur les manifestations concrètes de la piété puritaine et de la culture populaire. En particulier, l'article s'attache aux récits concernant les jugements de Dieu, aux rapports relatifs aux prodiges et merveilles, ainsi qu'à la possibilité de la continuation ou de la cessation des miracles. L'auteur insiste sur les continuités significatives des mentalités avant et après la Réforme, en renforçant la proposition selon laquelle le rôle du Protestantisme dans «le désenchantement du monde» a été exagéré. [eng] Abstract .This article explores belief in divine intervention in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England and considers the implications which the phenomenon of providentialism has for an understanding of the impact and entrenchment of the Protestant Reformation. It first surveys the general historiographical trends and then turns to examine the doctrine of providence and its practical manifestations in puritan piety and popular culture, focussing upon tales of God' s judgements, accounts of prodigies and wonders, and the question of the continutation or cessation of iracles. Emphasising the significant continuities between pre- and post-Reformation assumptions, it reinforces suggestions that Protestantism's role in promoting the "disenchantment" of the world' has been overstated.
