Abstract: [fre] L'espace du catholicisme dans l'Allemagne modeme évolue constamment au gré des usages différenciés qui en sont faits. L'établissement des frontières confessionnelles s'effectue moins selon la diffusion de la Réforme qu'en fonction de lignes de partage juridiques et politiques. Les usages de l'espace spécifiques aux catholiques se mettent en place progressivement à l'initiative des autorités et de Rome, mais aussi des fidèles, la présence concrète de la frontière favorisant des processus de distinction confessionnelle dans de nombreux domaines. Pendant la période des Lumières, la volonté d'aplanir certains antagonismes religieux va de pair avec des résistances et des préjugés montrant combien les espaces confessionnels sont devenus des représentations culturelles du social. [eng] The place of Catholicism in modem Germany has constantly evolved according to the different uses to which it has been put. Confessional boundaries have been established less according to the spread of the Reformation than along legal and political lines. The specific uses of space by Catholics has gradually been established and initiated both by the State authorities and Rome, but also by the Catholics themselves as the concrete presence of the boundaries fostered processes of confessional distinctions in a wide range of fields. During the Enlightenment, the desire to reduce religious antagonism went hand in hand with resistance and prejudice, which illustrates to what extent confessional places became cultural representations of the social.
