Abstract: [fre] Cette communication insiste sur un sujet trop rarement évoqué, qui est la participation des empires coloniaux, surtout français et britannique, aux deux guerres mondiales. L'apport des Dominions et des colonies en soldats et travailleurs a été important. Ces soldats ont connu des conditions de guerre analogues à celles des soldats européens. Aux souffrances subies par l'ensemble des com- battansts s'est ajouté un plus grand éloignement de leur pays et, pour les soldats dits «indigènes», une expérience qui a précipité l'entrée dans le monde moderne, et a contribué à encourager les nationalismes. [eng] This paper deals with the very important part played by the imperial armies, especiallly British and French, during the two World Wars. A great number of soldiers and workers came from the Dominions and Colonies. They had to endure similar conditions as those of their European comrades, plus, a harsher and longer severance from their mother countries. The discovery of the modern war accelerated the entry of the "native" men in the Modem World, and gave a boost to nationalisms.
