Abstract: [fre] Cet article étudie le développement de l'historiographie anglaise sur l'État anglo-saxon au cours du XXe siècle. Il se demande comment le mot « État », si évocateur des conditions politiques modernes, en est venu à être utilisé avec tant d'assurance pour décrire le système politique anglo-saxon tardif, qui semble, à première vue, ne posséder aucune des caractéristiques d'un État moderne. Après avoir examiné les questions de terminologie et de langage, l'article se penche brièvement sur les débats historiographiques traitant des administrations et des systèmes de gouvernement anglo-saxons, et étudie la question de l'unité du royaume anglo-saxon tardif. [eng] This paper explores the development of the English historiography of the Anglo-Saxon state across the twentieth century. It asks how it has happened that the word "state", so redolent of modern political conditions, has come to be used with such confidence to describe the late Anglo-Saxon polity which, at least superficially, appears to have none of the characteristics of a modern state. Having investigated questions of terminology and language, the paper looks briefly at historiographical discussion of Anglo-Saxon systems of government and administration and explores the question of the unity of the late Anglo-Saxon realm.
