Abstract: [eng] The history of the formation of the English nation state in the period 900-1050 presents a remarkable case-study of the making of a country and a people. This article analyses the elements - including regnal power, ethnic mythology and the invention of names - which made this process possible. By 1100 England's identity was shaped and defined; but it was an identity which also made it impossible for England to forge an effective relationship with the other countries and peoples of the British Isles. [fre] L'histoire de la formation de l'État-nation anglais entre 900 et 1050 est un exemple remarquable pour l'étude de la fabrication d'un pays et d'un peuple. Cet article analyse les éléments - y compris le pouvoir royal, la mythologie ethnique et l'invention des noms - qui ont rendu ce processus possible. Vers 1100, l'identité anglaise était déjà façonnée et définie mais c'était une identité qui rendait impossible la construction d'autres liens entre l'Angleterre et les autres régions et peuples des îles Britanniques.
