Abstract: [fre] Le but de cet article est de dégager l'impact spécifique de l'ouverture au commerce international sur l'intensité de la Recherche-Développement en Belgique.. Les principaux résultats empiriques sont les suivants : une grande ouverture à l'exportation défavorise la recherche en Belgique puisqu'elle correspond à des produits standardisés un peu sophistiqués. Par contre, la spécialisation intra-industrielle du commerce extérieur belge favorise la R-D dans ce pays, ce qui semble indiquer que cette spécialisation correspond à des créneaux nécessitant un effort considérable de recherche. Le taux d'importation sectoriel a un effet positif sur l'intensité en R-D des firmes belges suggérant qu'il existe de la part des producteurs nationaux une réaction concurrentielle à la pénétration étrangère, en termes d'effort de recherche. [eng] This paper investigates the impact that the opening to foreign trade exerts on Researd & Development of Belgian manufacturer firms.. The main empirical results follow. A large opening to exports negatively effects research intensity in Belgium. An explanation to this is that Belgian exports correspond to standardized, no sophisticatedpro-ducts. On the other hand, the intraindustry specialization of Belgian foreign trade has a positive effect on research intensity in Belgium. This seems to indicate that this specialization corresponds to a line of products requiring considerable efforts of R & D. The sectoral rate of imports also exerts a positive impact on R & D intensity suggesting that foreign penetration provokes a competition reaction on the part of national producers requiring additional efforts in R & D.
