Revue d'Économie Industrielle, 1996, vol. 75, issue 1, 187-210

Abstract: [eng] This article quantifies the costs and benefits of an open, interoperable digital television standard by constructing an economic model for six markets : broadeast, cable television, display, VCRs, personal computers, and workstations. The model estimates an open, interoperable standard for digital television will reduce average costs by 21 percent while increasing sales by 27 percent. This results from cost decreases of interoperable parts as a function of accumulated production inducing greater production. Other benefits, such as enabling multimedia applications and services, are not quantified, and will require further research and analysis.
