A National Research Network Viewed from an Industrial Perspective

Abstract: [fre] Pour mieux comprendre la nature des interactions entre science et technologie, il est important d'analyser les réseaux à travers lesquels circulent les compétences et les connaissances tacites, les matériaux et les objets. Les réseaux informels qui organisent les échanges de connaissance existent hors du marché et à l'extérieur des firmes. Ces réseaux sont considérés comme des supports importants de l'innovation. Dans cet article, les auteurs utilisent les données de coauteurs en tant qu'indicateurs de l'existence de réseaux hétérogènes, qui sous-tendent les liens entre la science et la technologie. Ils examinent le système des liens informels en Grande-Bretagne, en utilisant des données bibliométriques sur 14 années. Les résultats de ce travail suggèrent l'importance croissante des réseaux informels dans l'organisation de la recherche ; tout en soulignant des disparités sectorielles élevées. [eng] To understand the science and technology relationship, we need to know more about the networks through which embodied skills and tacit knowledge, materials and substances are exchanged. Informal networks organising knowledge exchange exist outside markets or firms and have been empirically shown to facilitate innovation. In this article, we use co-authored papers as indicators of the heterogeneous networks underpinning science and technology links. We examine the UK system of informal industry links by analysing 14 years of co-authorship data. Our results suggest that informal networking increasingly characterises industrial research, though industrial sectors differ greatly in the extent to which they network with university researchers.
