Consolidation bancaire paneuropéenne: un point d’étape

Abstract: [eng] The pan European consolidation in retail banking : where are we now ? . The question about the shape and the speed of the pan European consolidation in retail banking will be considered after the resumption of large American banking mergers and the recent takeover bid by Santander on Abbey. In this paper, authors present the specific features of recent restructuration of the European banks. Then, the current pressures fulfilled by above mentioned major events are evaluated. Finally, they identify other vectors in international banking business that create value for shareholders besides economies of scale, with regard to the difficulties to generate cost cuttings in the case of transnational deals. . JEL classification : F23, G21, G34 [fre] La reprise des grandes fusions bancaires Outre-Atlantique et l’OPA de Santander sur Abbey ont relancé la réflexion sur la forme et le rythme de la consolidation paneuropéenne dans les métiers de la banque de détail. Cet article revient en premier lieu sur les traits spécifiques de la restructuration récente des banques européennes. Il évalue ensuite la pression exercée par les banques anglo-saxonnes et par l’offre de l’espagnole. Compte tenu des difficultés à réaliser des synergies entre deux pays, on identifie enfin l’ensemble des vecteurs de création de valeur bancaire à l’international, rappelant que les économies de coût n’en sont qu’une des dimensions. .
