Abstract: [eng] Globalization, competition and cities . Authors show how the building of polycentric cities with smaller labour market areas is likely to restore the firms’ competitiveness without reducing the welfare of the workers. Such a strategy of urban development is so likely to help the big cities to support their rank in the urban hierarchy, preserving their position on international markets. . JEL classification : F02, R1 [fre] Les auteurs montrent comment la formation de centres secondaires d’emploi au sein des grandes métropoles urbaines est de nature à restaurer la compétitivité des entreprises sans réduire pour autant le bien-être des travailleurs. Une telle stratégie de développement urbain est ainsi susceptible d’aider les grandes villes à maintenir leur rang dans la hiérarchie urbaine, tout en préservant leur position sur les marchés internationaux. .
